Day Off, Out on the Town

Here in Calcutta, every day is about the same:  Wake up before the sun, go to mass and breakfast at the mother house, volunteer all morning, find lunch, volunteer the afternoon shift, find supper, sleep.  We go to bed at 8 or 9 every night, and we are not ashamed.

However, today is Thursday!  Thursday is a day off for volunteers and a day of prayer for the nuns.  We woke up, had a late breakfast, and then set off for our only day of sight-seeing in Calcutta.  First we walked to the Victoria Memorial, a lovely white building surrounded by peaceful gardens and reflecting pools.  It was so relaxing.  Then we had lunch at our favorite restaurant and took a bus to the Howrah bridge.  There was a constant stream of pedestrians walking across, many with outrageously large bundles perched on their heads.  We wandered through the busy, fragrant flower market, took a boat back to our own side of the river, and then wandered our way home.

It was fun to see more of the city.  Now we are (once again) exhausted.  Back to the 8:00 pm bedtimes!

  1. Sounds fun! OK...what's your favorite food in India overall? Lassis and naan don't count, because I already know you love those. :)
